I am a regular reader of a blog called "Overheard in New York - The Voice of the City" (see the list to my right to check it out). Typically, it is a very funny blog. People seem to talk to each other like no one else is listening.
Today this was what was overheard:
Little boy: Daddy, daddy! I wanna make a bear!
Buff dad: Nigga, I done told you a thousand times, thugs don't make bears! [Tiny black boy bursts into tears.]

Gosh darn it! THIS is the use of the "N" word that drives me...

Argh. That is what we are teaching our children?
Poor thing... I would have totally said something... probably a good thing I don't live in a big city.
I can't decide if it is the use of the "N" word that bothers me or the fact that he told his baby that men don't make teddy bears...
I was talking to Aaron about this last night, and he said...
"He's not a thug, yet, he's a little boy who wants to build a bear."
It reminded me of a therapist who recently told one of her clients who has behavioral issues (and learning disabilities) to take "teasing" from peers, "like a man")
I promptly reminded her that he wasn't a man; he was 13 and being bullied. But, I didn't remind her gently...
I don't have enough words to comment on that, Jessi. And the words that come to mind are not very nice...
