Unfortunately, my worst fears came true. I found the money...with Z.
When I dropped A at school I made a stop into Z's classroom. I pulled him out of class and, after a long discussion, finally got my $100 bill. It was in his backpack.
Now I don't know what to do. This is serious and not just any punishment is going to cover it....

Glad you found your money, but sorry you now have to find the punishment to fit the crime. Hope whatever you come up with works to prevent it from happening again.
Wow. I don't know what to say.
I'm so sorry. I wish I had some advice.
Oh dear. Not good
Perhaps you could make him do some work (supervised) that you feel equals $100 in kid labor... but maybe not work at home... work in the community to help him understand how lucky his is that he has what he has in this world. $100 dollars is A LOT of money, to you, to me, to many people... but there still exists those who haven't seen $100 in a LONG time.
Making him work will teach him that you don't just go somewhere everyday and easily get $100. You do hard work and that money is very important to your household.
Is there a soup kitchen in your area? or a shelter of some sort... He's 8 right? You could probably have him "interview" a volunteer and ask them how much food $100 would buy for the homeless... maybe he could wipe down tables or something while he is there??? I have lots of ideas about this stuff because I do the same things with my kids at work, but I am trying to find something age appropriate for Z...
I'm glad you're seeking an alternative to "regular" punishment because I think this is a great opportunity for him to learn a valuable lesson.
Sorry to hear this. I'd think about counseling. Z may be angry at you, or feeling slighted and lacking in a major way. Somehow his moral compass has become off-kilter. He's not thinking of the consequences of his actions. You need to find out why.
If he took it just to show kids that's one thing. But if he took it to spend, that is another story entirely.
My brother used to steal from me. Change mostly, but my parents were not strong enough in disciplining him and more serious problems occurred.
Good luck!
At least you found it! I'm not sure what sort of punishment he should get. Maybe you could make him do 100$ worth of chores to show what kind of work it takes to earn that kind of money!
This is a tough one. I don't envy you having to deal with it. Keep us posted on what you do so we can learn from you!
